Not ready for primetime.

Well if you’ve been here in the last 24-hours you know change is coming to ‘rapid dissent.’ What kind of change that will be is still a work in progress; such is life. I’m working on it.

Tonight I needed to post.

I’ve watched both debates thus far, and I’m sure of only one thing: Presidential politics makes for some great comedy. First there was John Stewart’s spectacular coverage of both events. He and his able team of Daily Show cohorts have outdone themselves with Indecision 04. In my opinion, they’ve got the funniest material yet.

Though that’s not to exclude Saturday Night Live’s chances. Last Saturday was the season premiere. I’ve been waiting all summer for this. SNL has a great history of mocking our nation’s chief executive, but I was honestly worried that the show’s slow fade into obscurity would continue for yet another year. With an unexpectedly competent Ben Affleck at the fore however, the cast of SNL – and particularly the potent combination of Tina Fey and Amy Poehler as the first female duo of Weekend Update anchors – delivered an excellent premiere. I’m looking forward to this week’s show.

And finally, I would like to humbly submit my own small contribution to election year comedy. Tonight an odd story appeared on the Cyberalert web page of the Media Research Center, a self-proclaimed conservative media watchdog group.” Naturally, because the topic of the story was bat-shit crazy, the Drudge Report ran with it. The title: “NBC Nightly News ‘ILIE’ Graphic Next to Bush’s Face… “. This is the picture offered as proof:

So here we have conservatives boasting of proof(!) of some vast leftwing conspiracy in the “liberal media” bent on subliminally influencing the American electorate. Well who knows? Anything’s possible. After all I recently received a postcard asking me to consider joining the Army National Guard, to “rediscover” the joys of military life after six years of honorable service in the Navy. This was their pitch:

Heh. Then there was this tasty offer on the opposite side of the card: “just go to : www.my-options.com/ernest.lombardi.” A quick check confirmed that some of my former colleagues have similar sites listed in their names. I wonder if they’ve been swayed by that picture on the front?

Godfrey:

Now THAT’S comedy.
